In December of 2001 it was announced that Arriva was going to operate passenger trains on certain lines in Western Jutland.

                                              Århus - Langå - Struer
                                              Thisted - Struer
                                              Struer - Skjern
                                              Århus - Herning
                                              Herning-Skjern-Esbjerg
                                              Esbjerg-Tønder

Before that Arriva was only operating busses in Denmark (20 % of all bus traffic). The decision was met with a certain amount of scepticism, because of reports from the UK about Arriva's bad reputation as a railway operator.

The first Arriva train departed on January 5th 2003 and chaos ensued: Heavy delays, cancellations and busses replacing trains. Many cancellations were due to lack of staff. The rolling stock were MR-trainsets preciously operated by the DSB.

Most have since been replaced by German "Lint"-trainsets from Alstom. There are 29 of these currently running on Danish tracks. Arriva will be keeping some MR-trainsets refurbished in Arriva colours.
